About Qatar National Library

Qatar National Library (QNL) is a non-profit organization under the umbrella of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development. QNL is supporting Qatar in its journey from a carbon-based to a knowledge-based economy by providing resources to students, educators, researchers and the wider community in Qatar. The project was announced on 19 November 2012 by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development.

QNL carries out its mission through three functions; National Library, University and Research Library, and a Metropolitan Public Library of the digital age.

The National Library collects and provides access to global knowledge that is especially relevant to Qatar and the region. It also collects, preserves, and provides access to heritage content and materials about the nation and the wider region.

The University and Research Library supports education and research at all levels by providing printed and digital library materials for students and researchers in various fields.

The Metropolitan Public Library delivers library services and facilities where visitors can socialize, enjoy reading, meet people and become information-literate.

In line with the library’s vision of bridging with knowledge Qatar’s and the Arab and Islamic world’s heritage and future, QNL engages in forging high-level international partnerships. These partnerships enhance the library’s ability to provide and share significant resources pertaining to the rich culture and history of the region.

Qatar National Library: A Modern Facility

The 45,000 square meters state-of-the-art library building is designed to encourage visitors to explore the progression of knowledge from the past to the present. The overall architecture of the building symbolizes the vision of QNL, which is “Bridging with knowledge Qatar’s and the Arab and Islamic world’s heritage and future”.

The Library will also host facilities that cater to the needs of all age groups and demographics of Qatar’s society, designed for individual or group study, and for research. The building will host a restaurant, a café, and a special events area that will serve as a meeting place for like-minded individuals.
The building is designed to achieve a balance between content availability and accessibility, on the one hand, and content preservation and security, on the other. To achieve these twin aims, the Library building houses the following:

  • Secured and humidity-controlled display cases that are well-distributed throughout the heritage area, as well as on the bridge, to showcase the collection and draw visitors’ attention.
  • Conservation Laboratory, which will be used to conserve and restore the collection for future generations.
  • Digitization Laboratory, which will work as the National Digitization Center and utilize state-of-the-art technology for the digital preservation of the collection.

Cutting-edge technology will be a prominent element of the building, which will ensure the optimum experience for library visitors. This technology will include:

  • A “Radio Frequency Identification” (RFID) book sorter system to enable faster self-check in/out, high security and inventory management.
  • A ‘People Mover’ system that will provide comfortable in-house transport.
  • A wide range of computer systems, tablets, interactive screens, and audio visual equipment to improve the overall user experience.

Qatar National Library: Supporting Open Access

The QNL plays a key role in supporting open access in Qatar by providing:

  • Open access to a vast collection of online resources through its main collection that includes academic journals, fiction and non-fiction literature, e-books, DVDs, and newspaper and magazine archives - in both Arabic and English
  • Free access to QNL's main collection for the entire community in Qatar, with the aim of spreading knowledge and information by eliminating any possible obstacles
